Bibo, George Edward

Longtime Fairbanks resident George Edward Bibo, 75, 
passed away March 30, 2010, in Chula Vista, Calif., after a 
long battle with diabetes.

George was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Calexico, Calif., to 
Hubert G. and Carmen R. Bibo. He was the third of four 
brothers, Robert H. Bibo, Oscar L. Bibo and Richard L. 
Bibo.

After graduating from Mar Vista High School in Chula 
Vista, George became a police officer with the San Diego 
Police Department until he was drafted by the Army in 
1958 and sent to Alaska.

The Army started a lifelong love affair with Alaska that 
lasted more than 50 years. After George got out of the 
Army in 1960, he went to work at Clear Air Force Station 
working for Protective Services as a fireman. His next 
stop was Fairbanks where he set up and managed several 
restaurants, including KFC, H. Salt, Tio Taco and The 
Backdoor Lounge. He has many friends in the restaurant 
business today.

He was an avid sportsman, spending as much time as he 
could fishing on Alaska's oceans, lakes and rivers. 
George has fishing buddies all across the state.

For the past 20 years, George was a snowbird. He spent 
summers in Fairbanks and winters in Mexico where he 
met his wife, Estela Bibo.

George was a life member of the Pioneers' of Alaska 
Igloo 4.

George helped a lot of people and was a friend to many 
more. It is hard to say goodbye to an old friend; he will 
be missed. 

George is survived by his wife, Estela Bibo; her son, 
Reynaldo Acuna and his wife Patricia and their children, 
Sebastián, Carlos and Emiliano, and her son, Jesus Acuna 
and his wife Diana and and their children, Humberto, 
Diana and Luis Raúl. He also is survived by his daughter; 
Lorna Bibo; and his brothers, Robert Bibo and Richard 
Bibo; and many nephews and nieces.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Hebert G. 
and Carmen R. Bibo; his brother, Oscar L. Bibo; and his 
longtime companion, Jeannie Briggs.

There will be a memorial service for George at 3 p.m., 
Friday, April 9, at Chapel of Chimes. 

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the 
American Diabetes Association .
