Pugh, David A. 83 8/10/1926 5/17/2010 Dave passed away the morning of May 17, 2010, at age 83. Born in Pittsburgh to Ellen and George Pugh, Dave married Patricia Ann Lawton Dec. 21, 1948. They had been friends since second grade and were married 62 years. Dave attended Culver Military Academy and was a Yale University graduate. He began his architectural career in San Francisco with Skidmore Owings & Merrill. In 1952 he joined the SOM team in Portland. SOM was regarded as one of the top architectural firms in the U.S. In 1963 Dave became a partner and led the Portland office to its great success. Dave has left his footprint on the Portland cityscape along with other cities, nationally and internationally. Dave was personally involved in, and very proud of, "Big Pink," the US Bank Tower. He remained with SOM until he retired in 1984. Watercolor painting became Dave's passion after retirement. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren, while sharing his works with family and friends. Dave and Pat enjoyed their home away from home at Salishan. The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology nourished Dave's artistic skills. Dave was devoted to his Christian faith. His worldwide travels became his palette for his love of painting. He also enjoyed drift boating on Northwest whitewater rivers, the Portland Symphony and jazz music. Last but not least, he fancied himself a wine enthusiast. He was a member of the University Club, Arlington Club, Multnomah Athletic Club, The Family Farm, American Institute of Architects, Contemporary Crafts Board and supported the Portland community. Dave is survived by his wife, Pat; children, Ellen, Peggy, David and Doug; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, in Lake Grove Presbyterian Church followed by a celebration of Dave's life in the University Club of Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to The University Club of Portland Foundation/Historic Preservation, The Sitka Center for Arts and Ecology/workshop foundation in Otis or The Parkinson's Center of Oregon, OHSU Foundation/PCO.
