Araneta, Gilbert P. Gilbert P. Araneta 10/28/1923 - 1/30/2010 Gilbert passed away leaving behind his six heartbroken daughters, Veronica, Barbara, Georgett, Annabelle, Letitia and Belinda; his beloved grandchildren, George, Felicia, Sean, Carleyna, Christopher, Amy and Kate; and four lovely great-granddaughters, Nizhoni, Colette, Claudia and Evangelina. A Tucson native, Gilbert was born and raised on Meyer Street in Barrio Viejo. He was the son of Louis and Elvira Araneta. After graduating from Tucson High School in 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Aurelia. Gilbert was drafted into the Army during World War II and was sent to officer training in Columbus, Ohio. He was later sent to the Berlitz School of Languages in France to learn German. Thereafter, he served in the European theater of World War II as a German Interpreter. Upon Gilbert's honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Tucson where, influenced by the classes in Graphics he had taken in high school, he co-founded Economy Printing and served as Chief Typesetter for many years. Gilbert was active in the Tucson community. He was a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, served on the Santa Cruz Church Restoration Committee and the Tucson Museum of Art Board of Directors. He was proud of his participation in Una Noche Plateada, Jaycees, Civitan, and the Hispanic Professional Action Committee (HPAC). He took special pride in his membership in the American Legion. He held a special place in his heart for Tucson High School, and was an active member of the THS Class of 1942. He was a great fan of the University of Arizona Wildcat basketball, football and baseball teams. He was always positive about the teams no matter what the scores, and was a consistently loyal fan. After retiring from his private business, Gilbert continued working full-time as a clerk for the Pima County Superior Court until he was 75 years old. He enjoyed his retirement, dedicating his time to traveling with his family, gardening, and attending activities with his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. Gilbert lived a full and active life enhanced by his love of music. A Memorial Mass to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010, 12:00 noon at St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center located at 1615 E. 2nd St. on the University of Arizona campus.
