BEACHELL, Richard 'Dick' June 22, 1936-August 13, 2007 A celebration of life gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at The Red Lion on the River in the Washington/Clark banquet room. Dick passed away peacefully with his wife and daughters at his side on Aug. 13 at the age of 71, due to complications from a stem cell transplant. He had battled non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for nearly three years with the grace and dignity that everyone knew him for. Dick was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He touched the heart and soul of everyone he met. He was so loved by all. Born June 22, 1936, and raised in Portland, Dick graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954. He earned his bachelor's degree at Oregon State where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and a master's degree from Portland State. Dick was a social studies teacher at Jefferson, Jackson and Wilson. He retired in 1996, but continued teaching night school at Benson. He loved teaching his kids; it was one of his many passions. His other great passion was coaching basketball. His coaching record was awesome. He won five PIL championships, three state boys' basketball championships and placed second, third and fifth in state tournaments. He was the PIL Coach of the Year 1985, Oregon Basketball Coach of the Year 1991, Oregon Men's Coach of the Year 4A in 1991. He was inducted into the PIL Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Wilson High Scholl Hall of Fame. He met his wife, Diana, in 1980 and they were married in 1981. In 1996 when he retired, he and Diana moved to Naples, Fla., where they lived happily for five years. Eventually, they decided to buy an RV and travel the U.S. However, after 10 months of traveling they returned to Portland to enjoy their two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Diana; daughters, Angie Stella and Kori Gaddis; grandson, Cole Gaddis; granddaughter, McKenna Gaddis and son-in-law, Jon Gaddis; sister-in-law, Judy Beachell; nieces, Kristin Bales and Diana Grigsby; great-nephew, Jacob Grigsby; great-niece, Kayla Grigsby; and brother-in-law, Alan Davis. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Beachell. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to Wilson High School Athletic Dept., Attn: Scott Aker, 1151 SW Vermont St., Portland, OR 97219.
