Gene Beach Gene Beach died March 19, 2006, at age 95. Miss Beach was born Nov. 9, 1910, in Kennewick, Wash., and raised in Bend. She received a bachelor's degree from Oregon State College and a master's degree from the University of Chicago. She worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture with Dust Bowl immigrants during the Depression. Then she supervised home economists for the War Food Administration during World War II. After the war, she was a supervisor for displaced and orphaned children in Germany and Austria for the United National Relief and Rehabilitation Agency. Later, she moved to San Francisco, where she was an associate regional commissioner for the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare until she retired and moved to Portland in 1976.
