Bessie Estella Cross 

Bessie Estella Cross died Nov. 20, 2000, at age 91. No service will be 
held. Mrs. Cross was born Aug. 22, 1909, in Beaufort, N.C., and was 
raised in Astoria. Her maiden name was Peacock. She was a clerk for 
Pacific Telephone for about 20 years. In 1957, she moved to Portland, 
where she continued to work for the company, which had become Pacific 
Northwest Bell (now Qwest), until retiring as a secretary in 1972. She then 
worked for Sandy's Camera. She was a member of Grace Episcopal 
Church in Astoria. In 1936, she married Alfred Makinen; they later 
divorced. 

Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Louise Dreitlein; three 
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to 
American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Telophase Cremation 
Society.
