Beryl MacLEAN She taught speech and debate for 20 years and even after retirement Beryl Anna Puckett Mac Lean was a life-long learner who read and was computer savvy. Mrs. MacLean, 89, died June 30 at her home in Cypress, Texas. She was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Tacoma, grew up in Wenatchee and graduated in 1940 from Whitman College where she was an Alpha Chi Omega. She later received a Master's degree from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania where she began teaching school. She was praised for excellence in developing speech-and-debate curricula used throughout the state. Mrs. MacLean and her husband, Richard retired and moved to Vashon Island were they lived for 20 years and later moved to Federal Way and then Houston. She was especially proud that a scholarship was set up in her name at a community college. Mrs. MacLean was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years and her sister, Velda Puckett Quade. She is survived by her son, Richard I. MacLean of Seattle, and daughters, Mary Kathryn Milks and B. Annie-Jean Mac Lean, both from Houston; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in Cypress on Thursday. As education was such a priority in Mrs. MacLean's life, her family requests that donations be made to the Beryl A.
