Jane Louise Osterhout PEABODY September 19, 1932 - October 6, 2001 Jane Peabody -- a loving, generous, exuber ant, and beautiful mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and dear friend, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2001. She was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She went to Roosevelt High School, graduating in 1950, a proud Silver Spur member. She attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority graduating with a BA in Communications. In 1956, Jane obtained her teaching certificate from the University of Pacific in Stockton, CA. She then went on to teach school in Cali fornia and then at Bryant Elementary in the Seattle Public Schools. In 1985, she returned to school at Seattle University where she ob tained her Alcohol Studies Degree and Drug and Alcohol Counseling license. She was a camper and a counselor at Camp Four Winds*Westward Ho on Orcas Island, WA., a member of the Women's University Club, The Washington Athletic Club, and a lifelong member of Plymouth Congregation al Church. She enjoyed swimming in the Northwest outdoor water year-round, run ning, gardening, sitting around the campfire singing and eatting oysters, and downhill skiing. Jane left a grand legacy in the community. She is remembered for her high energy, fun and laughter--her selflessness, uncondition al love and for her commitment to helping others. Since 1986 she worked as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for the King County North Rehabilitation Facility, where she coun seled residents and their families into sober and productive lives. She has pioneered, in tegrated and promoted many individual and family support programs within the King County Correctional System, including: vo cation and job projects, weekend family visi tation rights, Alanon, and transitional hous ing projects, specifically The Oxford House. She carried the message to a lot of people, tirelessly. Preceded in death by her mother, Mary L. Armstrong, 2000, father, Glen B. Osterhout, 1947, and her stepfather, Dr. Victor Arm strong, M.D., 1966. Survived by her loving daughters, Victoria Peabody Hansen, Mer cer Island, WA. and Mary Jane Peabody, Port Townsend, WA. and their father, Gerald A. Peabody, Sr.; brother, Glen Oste rhout, Seattle, WA.; son-in-law, Douglas Hansen, Sr., and three grandchildren, Made line, Douglas, Jr., and Helen Hansen; niece, Kim Crane and nephew, Glen Osterhout. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sat urday, October 13, at 1 p.m. at the Plymouth Congregational Church, located at 6th and University in downtown Seattle. We invite all friends of Jane to participate. If you so desire, contributions can be made in Jane's honor to The Oxford House, a tran sitional housing project throughout King County for newly sober individuals.
