Julia M. (Pugel) POTPINKA Died Feb. 26, 2003. Julia was born July 30, 1917, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Louis and Mary Pugel. The family moved to Longview in l927, where Julia graduated from R. A. Long High School before going on to Whitman College. She graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Whitman in 1937 with a degree in French. She married Joe Potpinka during World War II, and they lived in the Seattle area until his death in l981. They had a daughter, JoAnn. Julia served during the war as a temporary member of the U.S.Coast Guard Reserve, and worked for the Employment Security Department in Olympia. Then for 20 years she worked in the business department of Valley General Hospital, Renton. She lived for the past five years at the Exeter House in Seattle. She was a talented calligrapher and created artistic greeting cards. For several years in her retirement she worked as a volunteer in the main branch of the Seattle Public Library. In addition to her daughter JoAnn Bauer, she is survived by her brothers Jim and his wife, Jane, and Ed and his wife Echo, of Seattle. Another brother, Stan, died in l991. She also leaves a grandson , Jeff Harper, granddaughter Deirdre Gray Tullier, a great-grandson Elias, as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Monday, March 3, at 11 a.m., at St. Therese Church, 936 35th Avenue, Seattle. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle.
