PEAKE, James Orin June 15, 1917 ~ March 11, 2007 James Orin Peake died March 11, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born June 15, 1917, to Orin Peake and Myrtle Budd in Walla Walla, Wash., he started his school days in Spokane until the family moved to Portland in 1929. Jim attended Fernwood Grade School, Grant High School class of 1935, University of Portland 1935-1937, and graduated from University of Oregon with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1939. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Jim saw active duty in the Navy from 1940-1945, and served in Alaska and the South Pacific on the admiral's staff. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant commander. Jim married Thelma "Chris" Matson on Nov. 19, 1943. They lived on Mt. Tabor for 56 years where they raised five children, Sara Linn and husband, Dan; David Peake and wife, Jakie; and Mary Peake, all of Portland, Douglas Peake and wife, Nancy of Coolidge, Ariz., and Daniel Scott Peake. He also leaves grandsons, Daniel, David, and Aaron Linn; and great-grandson, Tanner Linn. He was predeceased by his parents, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Stow. Jim was a salesman for cosmetic companies traveling throughout the northwest. He also worked as a stock broker for E.F. Hinkle and Co., and office manager for Payco Collection Agency. Jim was a master gardener and always had a garden at home. He was active in Gray-Y basketball and Little League baseball. He was an excellent golfer, bowler, and bridge player. Jim will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday March 17, 2007, at the Cherry Park United Methodist Church.
