Marian Elizabeth (Pace) (Grending) Rice Marian was born on the 22nd of Feb. 1914 in Sunnyside, WA., to Earl J. and Lucy Eva (Fosket) Pace. Her grandparents were Lafayette and Helen Adelia (Thompson) Pace and Frank Forest and Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Fosket. She passed away in the early morning of December 31, 1997 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. Marian was married in 1935 to C.N. Grending in Sunnyside, and they were divorced. She was married in 1947 to Lewis Willson Rice who died in 1967. Marian came to the Tacoma area in the early 1940's to find work and spent most of her life in this area with the exception of about 10 years in Sacramento, CA. in the 1950's. She was a bookkeeper who liked working with figures and on retirement enjoyed Genealogy along with her piano, her grandchildren and those wonderful `sister lunches'. Our Mother, Sister and Aunt left us a legacy of much laughter, mingled with some tears. Her stories are many, the `Play-tex' girdle that was in her purse after work and wound up in the Salad Bar at a restaurant; the little man who lent her $15 in order to see Kay on her birthday with instructions to pass it on if she couldn't reach him - how many times did you pass that on Mom?; the bus driver who finally asked where we went each week-end with our suitcase and how surprised he was to find it was our laundry, going to your sisters to wash; the memories of Mom and Pop Isley with Dot and Ken; the Bakery on "K" Street with the cream puffs you couldn't throw away at the end of the day, so you and Hayes Jacobs got them to someone who could use them; rides on "Grandpa's Boat"; Mrs. Gallen in Sacramento; taking 6 of us (cousins) to S.F. and with only a dollar left in your pocket, walked right up to the maitre d' and asked if we could buy some soup and split it so we could sit at the window of the fancy restaurant and we did; the skating rink in Sacramento and the competition; the trip to the family cemetery back east and when you called the taxi company to pick you up since they'd just taken you there, said "Sure Lady" and hung up; the time you gave "the cousins" a notebook of pictures with your X-ray on the front, with "This is your Auntie Marian speaking"; the August Family get-together; counting money from your "money jar" with the grandchildren then great grandchildren; you left us so much to remember. Thank you Mom, for your humor, curiosity and love of life. Marian is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Irene (Pace) Kanzler, Verna Mae (Pace) and Jack Wanner, Donna Maxine (Pace) and Dick Bergman, all of Tacoma-Puyallup area; her son, Louis Earl Rice of Maryland; daughter Kathryn (Kay) E. (Grending a.k.a Rice) Young and son-in-law Donald Ray Young, Sr. of Tacoma. She was "Granny" to Scott and Melanie, Donald (Jr.), Mario (Sr.), Derek and Ronda Young, Rob, Anthony and Laureen Rice. She was "Mimi" to Great Grandchildren, Kevin, Michael, Saylor, Shaina, Kaylene and Mario (Jr.) Young, Alex and Sophia Rice. Also her nieces and nephews, Carol, John and Peggy, Dorothyann, Barbara and Cathy, April, Dick, Jack and Bob. Her "twin" cousin, George Ludwig of Seattle and many others in our family. And the little girl mom had to leave in 1951 (a cousin's child) and was mom's Gift on Christmas Day 1997, Sharon Ann (Milhorn) Scavella of Dallas, TX. (Thank you Janet and Sharon). Marian's wishes were for a party, not a funeral and so we will do that as a family in August when we are all together. Her ashes will be scattered as she asked and a plaque placed with her parents in Tacoma at their grave site. Donations if you wish may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis or Cystic Fibrosis Funds, as these two have very special meaning to our family, or to your own special charity or Church. Don and I (and mother asked us) to thank our Pastor and Church family at Lutheran Church of Christ the King for their support, love, strength and prayers as you helped us so much. Our thanks to the staff at Good Samaritan for their kindness and compassion over and above their profession and to Chaplains' John, Mimi and Mary also to the staff at St. Joseph therapy unit for the care and help you gave.
